My New Year’s Eve Rant
Okay, so it’s New Year’s Eve 2019, I’m at my buddy Marcus’s place in Brooklyn, and we’re arguing about health resolutions. He’s all, “Sarah, you gotta set goals!” And I’m like, “Marcus, I’ve been setting goals since 2005, and frankly, I’m tired.”
See, here’s the thing. I’ve spent the last 15 years working in health media, and I’ve seen it all. The fads, the trends, the “experts” who change their minds more often than I change my socks. (Which, for the record, is about every 36 hours.)
Why January 1st is a Scam
Look, I’m not saying you shouldn’t set goals. But the idea that January 1st is the only day to start? That’s a crock. I mean, who decided that? Some guy in a suit who wanted to sell more gym memberships?
I remember talking to this nutritionist, let’s call her Dr. Linda, at a conference in Austin. She said, “Sarah, health is a daily practice. It’s not a one-and-done thing.” And I was like, “Preach, Linda!” Because it’s true. Health isn’t about some magical date on the calendar. It’s about what you do every single day.
My Personal Health Journey (or Lack Thereof)
Let me tell you about last Tuesday. I woke up, had a green smoothie (because I’m basic like that), then proceeded to eat a giant muffin at 11:30am. I mean, I’m not perfect. Nobody is. And that’s okay.
I’ve tried all the things. The diets, the cleanses, the fancy workouts. I’ve spent $87 on a single smoothie because some influencer told me it was “life-changing.” Spoiler: It wasn’t. It was just expensive.
But here’s what I’ve learned. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being consistent. And it’s about finding what works for you, not what works for some random person on the internet.
Community Events Local Activities (Yes, Really)
I know, I know. You’re thinking, “Sarah, what does this have to do with anything?” But hear me out. One of the best things I’ve done for my health is getting involved in community events local activities. It’s not just about the physical activity. It’s about the mental boost. The social connection. The fact that I’m not just some lonely person on a treadmill.
I started going to these community events about three months ago. And honestly, it’s been a game-changer. (Okay, fine, I said I wouldn’t use that word. But it’s true.)
A Tangent About Sleep
But let’s talk about sleep. Because nobody talks about sleep. And it’s completley underrated. I used to think sleep was for the weak. Then I turned 40. Now I’m like, “Where’s my chamomile tea? Turn off the lights. I need my beauty sleep.”
I read this study once. 214 respondents, or something like that. It said that people who prioritize sleep are more likely to stick to their health goals. Which makes sense, right? If you’re exhausted, you’re not gonna want to cook a healthy meal. You’re gonna want to eat a frozen pizza. (Guilty.)
My Final Thoughts (Which Aren’t Really Final)
So, here’s my advice. Forget January 1st. Start today. Start with something small. Start with something that makes you happy. Because health isn’t about depriving yourself. It’s about nourishing yourself. In every way.
And if anyone tells you different, they’re selling something. Probably a smoothie.
Which honestly nobody asked for but here we are.
